This course was about breaking free from existing expectations or habits the students might have in their writing practice. It did so by discussing the mechanics of a very broad and colourful range of text-forms from high art to advertising to outsider art, facts, jokes, headlines, photo-stories and diagrams. From considering poetry that knows it is poetry, but also finding the poetic within mass forms. We went in search of a poetry of random connections and awkward juxtapositions and simple strategies of subversion. From very diverse source material a number of writing exercises were developed using unusual methods and contexts for generating text-based woks.
