Throwback: Von 0 auf 100
Immer wieder im Wandel: Auf unserer Plakatwand sind die Ergebnisse der Workshops zum Thema analoger Plakatgestaltung zu sehen. „Von 0 auf 100“ war das Motto der Workshops der anlässlich der gleichnamigen Konferenz stattfand.
Studieninformationstag
Am 20. November fand der alljährliche Studieninformationstag statt. Auch die HfG nutzte die Gelegenheit und bot den jungen Interessierten einen Einblick in das breitgefächerte Studienangebot. Unter dem Motto „KD Reisen“ stellten unsere Erstsemester den Fachbereich Kommunikationsdesign vor und boten anschließend eine exklusive all inclusive Tour durch die Räumlichkeiten der Hochschule.
Am selben Nachmittag fand die erste Mappenberatung im WS 19/20 statt. Prof. Rebecca Stephany stand den angehende StudienbewerberInnen Rede und Antwort auf Fragen zum Studium und der Bewerbung. Vor allem wurden mitgebrachte Mappen intensiv besprochen und Feedback dazu gegeben.
Studio Visits: Slanted und 2xGoldstein
Homebase K-Town: Im November besuchten unsere Studierenden des ersten Semesters den Verlag Slanted Publishers und das Grafikbüro 2xGoldstein. Wir erhielten Einblicke in die jeweiligen Tätigkeitsfelder, Projekte, Werdegang und gestalterische Positionen der beiden Studios.

„Von 0 auf 100“ Konferenz an der HfG Karlsruhe
Vom 11. bis zum 20. Oktober 2019 lud die Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe zur Ausstellung „100 beste Plakate 18 Deutschland Österreich Schweiz“ ein, für die jährlich Grafikdesigner*innen aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum für ihre Plakate ausgezeichnet werden. Für das Jahr 2018 prämierte die Jury aus über 2000 Einreichungen von insgesamt 646 Gestalter*innen die aus ihrer Sicht 100 herausragendsten Arbeiten.
„Von 0 auf 100“ war das Motto der Ausstellung in den Lichthöfen der HfG Karlsruhe, unter dem nicht nur die Plakate der Gewinner*innen aus dem Jahr 2018 ausgestellt wurden. Vorträge, zweitägige Workshops zur analogen Plakatgestaltung und eine Neuumsetzung der großen Ausstellungswand der HfG sollten über die Ausstellung hinaus den Dialog über die gestalterische Alltagspraxis im Grafik- und Kommunikationsdesign in unterschiedlichen Kontexten eröffnen. Die Umsetzung des Programms lag dabei in den Händen von Preisträger*innen des Wettbewerbs, unter denen auch einige (ehemalige) Studierende der HfG Karlsruhe waren.
NoFoundry gewinnt Gunther-Schroff-Preis bei Rundgangseröffnung
Bei der feierlichen Eröffnung des Rundgangs am 18.07 wurden herausragende Arbeiten von Studierenden aller Fachgruppen in einer Preisverleihung durch die Fördergesellschaft ZKM / HfG gewürdigt.
Die Gruppe NoFoundry aus der Fachgruppe Kommunikationsdesign wurde mit dem Gunther-Schroff-Preis gewürdigt. Die NoFoundry ist eine von Studierenden der Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe betriebene Plattform zum Schriftenvertrieb. Das Ziel dabei war und ist, Studierenden an der HfG Karlsruhe die Möglichkeit zu geben, selbst entworfene Schriften zu verkaufen, zu präsentieren oder sich mit anderen Studierenden und Interessierten über die Gestaltung und Verwendung von Schrift im Kontext von Design und im kulturellen Raum auszutauschen
Präsentationstag Sommersemester 2019
Am 17. Juli fand der Präsentationstag des Fachbereichs Kommunikationsdesign und somit der Abschluss des Sommersemesters statt.
Wir danken allen Studierenden für die Vorstellung ihrer Projekte und unseren externen Lehrenden des Sommersemesters: Giliane Cachin, Marie Pohl, Julia Kahl, Urs Lehni, Anette Lux, Lovis Caputo, Johannes Willi, Daniel Rother und Krispin Hee.
Roadtrip 3/3: Zürich
Die Exkursionen im Rahmen des Seminar "roadtrip" von Anton Stuckardt und Juliane Hohlbaum bezwecken den Studierenden des ersten Jahres einen Überblick an verschiedenen Gestalterischen Positionen und Produktionen zu geben. So besuchen wir insgesamt 15 verschiedene Grafikstudios und 1 Druckerei in Karlsruhe, Berlin, Paris und Zürich.
Der dritte Roadtrip führte die Studierenden nach Zürich, wo sie Philipp Herrmann, Aude Lehmann, Julia Born, Anna Albisetti, Simone Farner, Urs Lehni, Marco Walser, Sereina Rothenberger und David Schatz trafen.
Bookboy at the Art Book Fair Basel 2019
KD Students Jonathan and Juliana went to Basel representing the Bookboy at the I Never Read Art Book Fair Basel 2019. They almost missed their train but they managed to get there, and for dinner they paid 6CHF for tomatos at the supermarket. That hurt. On the next day they had to fight for their stand because other people were already there but the situation was solved without problems! It was a little bit crazy but it was incredibly fun. It was really nice to get to know other designers and of course to represent and sell the student's work.
Talkshow #46: Marijpol/Marie Pohl
Marijpol, 1982 in Berlin geboren, studierte Visuelle Kommunikation und Illustration in Hamburg. Ihre Comics erscheinen in internationalen Magazinen und Anthologien wie Canicola, Orang und Spring. Für ihre erste Graphic Novel Trommelfels, die 2011 im avant-verlag erschien, wurde sie 2012 mit dem ICOM-Preis für das Beste Szenario geehrt. Marijpol lebt und arbeitet in Hamburg.

Sign up: Let’s make some noise! Physical computing workshop
The two-day physical computing workshop will be led by Alessandro Squatrito and Tommaso Laterza, interaction designer and creative technologist at Frog design Munich. Sound and movement are two fundamental variables for engaging an interaction that involves in a complete and complex way and as in physics and chemistry, an action corresponds to a change in a new state. The theme of the workshop is movement that produces sound. We will use Arduino microprocessors to control actuators (servo and stepper motors) from which we will produce a sound. In groups, students will create small sound machines capable of transforming the movement of one or more motors into sounds.
The workshop will take place on June 27th and 28th from 10 am and is open to all students interested in technology and interaction design. It is essential to bring your own personal computer and objects, tools and anything that can create a sound when moved or exposed to a movement.

Wir gratulieren Friederike Spielmannleitner, Béla Meiers, Simon Knebel die mit Prof. Sereina Rothenberger und David Bennewith mit der Publikation "Questions? ?Looking for answers in the middle of somewhere." den Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung gewonnen haben.
Begründung der Jury:
Gelb, Schwarz, Rosa. Überall - fast. Erste Hälfte Schwarz auf Gelb, zweite Hälfte Schwarz auf Rosa. Mittendrin eine Übergangszone - montierte, überlagerte, verschmolzene, ausgesparte, ineinanderkopierte Fotofragmente, Grafikfragmente, Illustrationsfragmente, Strukturfragmente, positiv, negativ, figurativ, assoziativ. ?Ein Hybrid, ein Mash-up, ein Tagebuch, eine Protokollsammlung mit der Begegnung der designpädagogischen Art. Fragen? Stellten Studierende der Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Suchten Antwort in der Atmosphäre von Irgendwo im Allgäu, genauer: in Rotis, dem legendären "Institut für analoge Studien" von Otl Aicher. Als Katalysatoren wirkten ausgewiesene Gestalterinnen und Gestalter aus mehreren europäischen Gefilden. ?Ein papiergewordenes typografisches Experiment, ein Sammelbecken für Derivate von Aichers epochaler Schriftschöpfung, ein Appell für Mut zur Gestaltung mit offenem Ausgang, ein Manifest für die Verflüssigung der Satzkolumne.

Der zweite Roadtrip führte die Studierenden nach Paris, wo sie Pierre di Sciullo, Golgatha, aaaaa Atelier, Raphaël Bastide und Olivier Lebrun trafen. Émilie Rigaud sprach ein paar Tage später via Skype mit unseren Studierenden.

Talkshow #44: Giliane Cachin
"Giliane Cachin studied graphic design in Geneva for 3 years before graduating with a Bachelor in graphic design at the ECAL in Lausanne. The Swiss Design Award 2015 enabled her a residency in New York, where she made one research per day - a daily list of things that caught her attention, from type designs to medieval rules. This research project will result in a newspaper, containing all the references she found during her journey through the United States, and thus to be shared by the readers.
In our interview she explains why design is always a mixture between experimentation and organization.
What is the task of design?
It's a mix between experimentation and organization. Facing a new mandate, I will experiment to define the tone of the project and organize my time from the prior knowledge to the final deadline. I will experiment to create the tools that I need and organize the content I have been provided with or found out by myself. I will experiment to find out what will be the object, organize the structure of my project, experiment to find a right way to show it and organize the space.
How does design change life?
Dreaming in my childhood of becoming an astronaut to finally become a designer has definitely changed my life.
Is good design invisible?
I would say the opposite. I think a good design can make elements visible.
Must design create something new?
Setting a new printed train timetable doesn't reinvent anything, but it can be a good demonstration of design."

NoFoundry 'Type and Table Tennis' at the Manhattan Bar
On Friday May 31st, NoFoundry, the HfG Karlsruhe student type foundry, hosted a Type and Table Tennis event in the context of the Manhattan Bar residency program. They invited students and passers-by alike to come over for drinks, snacks, table tennis and typographic fun, and to bring fonts, ideas or questions with them.
Excursion to Norman Potter residence, Le Bouchage, Charente, France
From 22-24 May 2019, Prof. James Langdon, Anton Stuckardt, and a group of 10 students visited a house formerly owned by English designer and writer Norman Potter (1923-1995). During the visit, part of the seminar 'Werktreue', the group explored this derelict house, which still holds many clues to Potter's life and philosophy on design. Some objects were brought back to Karlsruhe, and work continues on documenting these, and the experience of visiting the house itself. Potter was a forceful and opinionated designer, but little of his work survives. In this place we confronted the reasons for his disappearance from design history and asked if and how we should represent him today.
Roadtrip 1/3: Berlin

Real Talk #3: Exchanges/Internships
Die Vortragsreihe Real Talk geht weiter! Dieses mal haben Cécile Kobel, Nina Overkott&Moritz Schottmüller, Kathrin Rüll, Tatjana Stürmer und Arno Schlipf von ihren Erfahrungen im Praktikum bzw. Auslandsaustausch berichtet.
YAW: Karlsruhe — Paris mini-exchange program
During the Wintersemester of 2018-19, 14 students of the HfG Karlsruhe and the Ensad Paris participated in a unique, student-organized exchange program: a series of week-long immersive residencies, going back and forth between France and Germany, rounded up by a weekend reunion at the end of the semester.
As a base for our mini-residencies and as a graphical documentation of the exchange, each student had to produce 7 pages, about their experience in their host school, making use of the ressources available on site.
To conclude the project, we all met for a reunion weekend, to produce the 20 copies of the common publication, constituted by all individual 7-pages projects. The meeting point was an old screw factory near Verdun, where we spent two days hand-binding all the books and free-hand designing the covers, without forgetting to celebrate with a little party on Saturday night!
On Monday morning, the 20 publications were finally in front of us and it was time to part ways, but not without a final group photo and a promise to see each other again soon!
Talkshow #43: Ted Davis, CREAT{L}IVE CODING
Ted Davis is an American media artist / designer / educator based in Basel, Switzerland, where he teaches interaction design and coordinates the UIC/HGK International Master of Design program within the Visual Communication Institute, The Basel School of Design HGK FHNW. His open source projects (basil.js, XYscope, P5LIVE) enable designers to program within Adobe InDesign, render vector graphics on vector displays, and collaboratively create live coded visuals. With international exhibits, lectures and workshops, he empowers students to take hold of the computer's ability to design possibilities beyond that of the hand or mouse.
Sharing his multi-faceted practice, this talk will explore designing through digital volatility, custom software tools, new + newer media, and collaborative live coding

Studierende und Professoren hatten die Möglichkeit eigene Projekte vorzustellen und einen Einblicke in die in diesem Semester entstandenen Arbeiten zu bekommen. Ein großer dank geht an alle Professoren, Gastprofessoren und Dozenten.

Bookrelease: ‘Questions? Looking for answers in the middle of somewhere’
What is this? A book launch? Yes, exactly!
What is the name of the book? The book is called ‘Questions? Looking for answers in the middle of somewhere’.
What is it about? It started with Sereina Rothenberger & David Bennewith inviting a selection of graphic designers to Otl Aicher’s ‘Institut für analoge Studien’ in Rotis, in May 2015 and then again in November 2017. Over two days these designers were interviewed in a myriad of ways by graphic design students from the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, whose assignment it was to learn to ask, and design, questions.

Saturday Type Fever

On the 11th and 12th of January 2019, NoFoundry hosted the type-marathon Saturday Type Fever: for 30 hours, around 80 students and typographers from numerous schools from Germany, Belgium, Estonia, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands gathered at the HfG Karlsruhe to work side by side on their unfinished fonts or one-day font projects. The event also aimed to connect type design students from different universities across regional boundaries, and create a lively exchange between apprentice typographers and designers. Carlotte from Geneva, Switzerland says : "I wanted to challenge myself and see what I can do in thirty hours. It's also a great opportunity to meet other designers and work in an unfamiliar environment. "
The marathon started on Friday at 18:00 and lasted until Saturday at midnight. To kick off the work in a playful way and gather some inspiration, seven students of the HfG organised an hour-long workshop on analog type design in smaller groups for all the participants. Then, throughout the event, 10 graphic designers and typographers, student or not, held short talks giving an insight into their works and the design of fonts, and offered feedback sessions for participants to discuss the work in progress. Guests included Johnson/Kingston and Reto Moser, Charlotte Rohde and Tatjana Stürmer, Jérémy Landes, Simon Knebl, Riefka Elhabachi, Massimiliano Audretsch, Catharina Hirsch and Severin Geissler.
The designers were working in groups of 4 to 7 people per table and every ten hours, a zine was produce for each group recording the actual stand of each participant. These process zines were then displayed after the end of the countdown on Saturday night as the results of the marathon. A great number of typefaces were produced during the marathon, including numerous first ever typefaces and collaborative projects. Alice from Lugano in Switzerland had no previous experience in type design: "I wanted to try to make a typeface; so it was my first experience in type design and the event was the best opportunity for that. I am very happy that I came here. "
NoFoundry is a type foundry run by students of the HfG Karlsruhe, established in the semester 2017/18 in a seminar of the HfG Professor duo Johnson/Kingston, with the aim of giving students the opportunity to sell their own typefaces and to exchange ideas with other students and designers about the design and use of typefaces. The next NoFoundry font release, and the first ever external font in the catalog, is planned for early March.

Unter dem Titel "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" konzentrieren sich Ivan Weiss und Michael Kryenbühl in ihrem Vortrag auf die Interferenz von Grafikdesign und Technologie und wie Werkzeuge die Bildsprache beeinflussen.
Ivan Weiss und Michael Kryenbühl arbeiten zusammen unter dem Namen Johnson / Kingston in Bern und Luzern als freischaffende Grafiker. Neben klassischen Projekten im Bereich Visuelle Identität, Plakat- oder Buchgestaltung realisieren sie Projekte an der Schnittstelle zwischen Gestaltung und Technologie. Es geht ihnen dabei um die Umnutzung und die produktive Auseinandersetzung mit den Möglichkeiten neuer Werkzeuge und die Suche nach neuen experimentellen Ausdrucksformen.

Bomberjacken, Jogginghosen, Tarnfleck…Supreme, Yeezys, Off White, Vetements: Was das Rampenlicht einer Mode durchlaufen hat, verschwindet im Dunkeln, wird entwertet und vergessen. Doch die Auf- und Abbewegungen der Mode bringen auch Menschen zusammen oder trennen sie wieder. Und gerade weil Mode dem Körper als Hülle so nahekommt, erscheint die polyamouröse Affäre mit ihr wie ein andauernder Ausnahmezustand. Hans-Christian Dany ist Künstler und Autor und lebt in Hamburg. Dany ist Mitherausgeber der Zeitschrift Starship, 2018 erschien sein Buch MA-1. Mode und Uniform, 2013 Morgen werden ich Idiot. Kybernetik und Kontroll-gesellschaft und 2008 Speed. Eine Gesellschaft auf Droge. Als Advising Researcher ist Dany an der Jan Van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht tätig.
